While the evidence shows B. burgdorferi can be transmitted within 24 hours, it is much more common for infection to result from longer feeding times. Also important to note is that even when ticks feed to repletion, transmission is not guaranteed and some bites from infected ticks may never cause infection in the host. As evident above, even when the infected nymphs were allowed to feed to completion, approximately 5% of rodents did not contract B. burgdorferi infection.
